I first came across the news that Wayne was light in the spurs when I
was staying at a kitschy old out-of-the-way hotel in the Valley
called the Sportsmen’s Lodge. I got to chatting with a long-time
hotel employee who began dishing dirt about some of the famous people
he had come across during his long tenure there. His favorite, he
said, was Bogie who used to tip him with a $50 bill and a Cuban
cigar. His next anecdote threw me for a loop, however.

“John Wayne used to come here all the time,” he recalled. “He was a
pansy, you know.” In a million years, I would have never guessed that
John Wayne, that lovable redneck, was gay. But my source told me
“most of those cowboys were.”

“He used to come by in the afternoon with men to go fishing in the
pond and then they’d take a room and he’d say he was in ‘conference’
and that he shouldn’t be disturbed. We all knew what that meant and
one of the chambermaids told us that she once caught him getting a
blowjob from a guy. But unlike some of the other stars who came by
with men, Wayne didn’t like them too young. His friends were usually
in their twenties or even older, but none of them were famous, at
least not the ones he would rent a room with.”

He had lots of similar stories about other guests, but I’ll save some
of those for another day. 

I know I have been outing a number of celebrities lately, and some of you may get the idea that I believe every prominent person in America is gay. (For the record, IUC’s definition of gay includes bisexuality as well as those who have dabbled in adventures with the same sex at some point).
But today for the first time, I have decided to out a public figure as straight. Ever since I started this blog, I have received numerous emails from people assuring me that a certain former First Lady is as queer as they come. And no it’s not Eleanor Roosevelt, whose special White House relationship with Lorena Hickok is the subject of a major forthcoming book by my old colleague, journalist/historian Max Wallace, who will document in fascinating detail not their well-documented lesbian affair, but how the cigar-smoking, tuxedo-wearing Hickok — who had her own bedroom in the White House –  used her close “friendship” with Eleanor to majorly influence FDR’s New Deal and change the social fabric of America.

Instead, my investigation centers on the rumored sexuality of Eleanor’s modern-day incarnation, none other than Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Unlike her predecessor Condoleezza Rice, whose barely disguised lesbian relationship with filmmaker Randy Bean has been common knowledge in Washington and Stanford for years, there is not a single piece of evidence that Hillary has ever been in any panties other than her own.

For months, I have attempted to track down some evidence that Hillary has Sapphic inclinations. She’s one of those figures that, like Tom Cruise, people just insist is gay, assuming that this is common knowledge and that anybody who assumes otherwise is either naive or stump dumb. When I started my investigation, I was one of those who assumed the stories were true. I even once reported on my conversation with a woman who claimed to be her ex-lover, which I have since concluded was a hoax.

But now, after an exhaustive search for clues, I have concluded that Hillary’s reputed lesbianism can be traced back to the same Republican dirty tricksters who planted the rumor that Bill Clinton had fathered a black child in Arkansas – a rumor which practically every Republican in the nation believed until a DNA test proved otherwise. Ironically, it appears that the same people who planted the Hillary is a lesbian rumor also planted the blatantly false canard linking her to the murder of former White House aide Vince Foster, with whom they insist she was having an affair. (During my investigation, in fact, I actually found more convincing evidence that she had an affair with Foster than I did of a same-sex dalliance, though the notion that she had him murdered is utter bollocks.)

In retrospect, my failure to find the smoking gun or even a trace of evidence is not surprising. Think about it. If Hillary were indeed gay, wouldn’t the forces of the vast right-wing conspiracy have dug up the evidence long ago and used it to discredit her or her husband? Come to think of it, the Obama campaign — populated by many former Clinton White House staffers who presumably know the truth — would have been happy to leak the same evidence at a time when Hillary was the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination last year. But nada. Not even a whisper.

But loyal IUC readers don’t despair. Today’s straight outing doesn’t mean I have turned over a new leaf. Plenty of closets still to open in coming weeks.   Stay tuned.

IUC has learned that Oprah is seriously contemplating taking a page from her former talk show rival, Rosie O’Donnell, and finally coming out as a lesbian shortly after she gives up her talk show.
During my undercover investigation posing as a gay actor in Hollywood a couple of years ago,  the most frequently cited closet case by those in the know did not reside in Los Angeles but in Chicago, none other than the queen of daytime television.

“Get real,” dished a prominent Hollywood poker playing group of industry pros who call themselves the ‘Queers of the Round Table.’ “Only those in the fly over states still believe Oprah is straight.”

The supposed subject of her Sapphic affection, of course, is Gayle King, her BFF who has been joined at Oprah’s hip and apparently other parts of her anatomy since 1976 when they worked together at a Baltimore TV station.  King later married and divorced a lawyer and had two children, for whom Oprah is the godmother. Oprah has never married.

When rumors about the couple’s special relationship began to surface in the early 90’s, Oprah suddenly announced that she was “engaged” to a businessman named Stedman Graham, better known as the most famous beard since Santa’s. When they failed to marry, Oprah explained that they had decided to have a “spiritual union” instead. Occasionally she trots Stedman out on the red carpet with her, but numerous insiders have told me that they are definitely NOT a couple.

 Both Oprah and Gayle denied being lesbian lovers a few years ago, sort of. In an interview with Oprah’s O Magazine, Gayle said, “The truth is, if we were gay, we would so tell you, because there’s nothing wrong with being gay.” Oprah’s comment was a similar non-denial denial: “I’ve told nearly everything there is to tell. All my stuff is out there. People think I’d be so ashamed of being gay that I wouldn’t admit it? Oh, please. “  Gayle did admit, “If Oprah were a man, I would marry her.” Tellingly, the denials prompted Rosie O’Donnell herself to speculate that the couple were probably lesbians even if they’re “not doing it,” saying that she thought Oprah and Gayle were “a little bit gay.”

I have been trying to track down the gay rumors about Gayle and Oprah for ages and, although I have never seen them in bed together or interviewed somebody who claims to have had sex with either one of them,  I am now told by someone close to her production company that Oprah feels it important to come clean about her relationship “when the time is right,”  and that Oprah herself has speculated that she will follow Rosie’s path of waiting until shortly after her talk show ends. “Look for her to go on Barbara Walters a week or two after her show is off the air,” she says. The insider told me that those at Harpo who know the truth are unconcerned because they don’t think her admission would have a negative impact on her ratings. “The sticking point is the black community, particularly black women,” she explains. “Oprah is very proud to be a role model for black women, but she knows how homophobic and Christian the community is, and she worries that the truth would alienate her from her sisters.”

When I met her in New York a couple years ago, Oprah struck me as a genuine and sincere person. She showed particular affection to my daughter and was nothing but gracious. While I can respect her reasons for remaining in the closet, I also know the immeasurable impact she could have on homophobic middle America by coming out. Please don’t wait, Oprah. You’re a big enough role model that your admission could do more to break down the barriers of intolerance than perhaps any other celebrity on earth.

Important Update:  A Caucasian woman contacted IUC today, claiming she’s had a 16-year affair with Oprah.  Her story seems solid.  I’m attempting to get Oprah’s side of the story.  Until then, I won’t reveal more.
