OT: Today, I saw an elderly neighbor who is quite active. She is an artist. So I sat down to chat with her over coffee at an outdoor service stop.
ReplyShe mentioned that one of her men friends was caught in a bind about gay marriage. So I listened.
Then I ventured that I was against gay marriage but somehow that led to the topic of priests and the molestation scandal. She told me that one of her friends, a devout catholic, had the worst time of it because of this. This led to discussion about putting human beings on pedestals. Then I asked, Did you know that John Wayne was gay? Before I could clarify it to bi, she said that she already knew. She said that she could tell.
I haven’t been to the “men only” meetings of straight, gay and otherwise males of all ages. But I ran into one of the habitues. We met at a hall where the late partner of a good acquaintance was being honored. (I hadn’t met the older man; and it’s a long story about the surprises I was subjected to when it went on.)
But one of the attendees was a guy who frequents the men only meetings. He almost demanded to know why I was a no-show.
Well, although one hears things about the classic actors that will not be given to the general public, I stopped attending because it lost its intrigue for me. But I made a different excuse for him which was true but not apparently insulting, (to him).

Then she came to the point that Tony Curtis, (Janet’s ex-husband) is gay. She mentioned she saw him in person and he was dressed in a rather flamboyant manner; (translation: he had a feminine appearance.)
That was what led to the topic of John Wayne, and putting actors/actresses on pedestals.

ReplyIsn’t it so interesting to talk to the older folks who remember so much of history – I like to talk to them just about ordinary things, like how they cooked during the war – and life before computers cell phone and microwaves – actually even before plastic!! lol I think the world was a lot smaller than – they didn’t have all this instant access – people actually hung out with their neighbors and kids played in the streets. Anyway – about Tony Curtis – I always heard rumors but I thought some of that might have stemmed from Some Like It Hot where he was in drag for the part – I think there may have been some carryover from that. HW seemed to protect each other more back then, or at least the Studio would protect their stars from scandal. I believe HW still protects itself but not in the same way they used to. I mean for Gods sake, look at the subterfuge of Loretta Young, going away to have Clark Gables child and then telling the world (and the child!!) that she was adopted.
….I’m on a roll now……..does anyone really believe that no one knew Joan Crawford was absolutely bat chyt crazy and that the kids were in danger? Come on, people had to know, but no one stepped in to help them!! Does this scenario sound familiar at all? Mommie Dearest with 6 poor little ones, I hope she doesn’t wake them up in the night and rip their clothes off the hangers or make them scrub the bathroom floor – makes you wonder where Daddy Dearest is in all this. But then, thats probably why they are pretending to still be a couple. Fear!!
ReplyI looked at the Daily Mail pics of their supposedly new 40 million dollar Italian Villa (yea and another 40 million to renovate I would imagine) but anyway – it occurs to me that their houses are getting bigger and bigger – seems like the further apart their relationship gets the bigger the houses lol) Remember that sweet cozy house in New Orleans – too close for comfort so they sold it hahaha!

ReplyI too learn so much from older people. Once upon a time they were young and attractive. Of course, it was a more innocent time. They have been through so much, and they have plenty to teach us.
It is a pity that we have such a youth-oriented society and the spotlight is on them while neglecting the wisdom of the elders.
I lived in San Francisco once, as did my friend. People who lived there have a certain attitude regarding show business. And so she has. That was when she was in touch with many males there who are attracted to women artists.
She had left by the time I saw this item in The San Francisco Chronicle regarding Tony Curtis. He, Curtis was bar-hopping in The Castro, a famous gay section of San Francisco. It was reported that Curtis was chased out of the Castro district by gay men. It didn’t elaborate. So one was left to wonder what Curtis could have said or done that triggered the outrage.
That could be one of the reasons he came out so strongly (during the oscar-voting timeline) against “Brokeback Mountain”. It’s a long story, and others were involved. They mainly cited John Wayne, whose legacy they claimed was insulted. Now many of these actors failed to say THEIR OWN career was greatly enhanced by gay artists. They also failed to cite the many gays, bi’s and lesbians who were in Wayne’s films. Nor did they mention his favorite director, John Ford, who was outed by several top insiders.
Anyway the film won a whole lot of Best Picture citations from critics groups around the world.
Still, the academy caved. They gave it to “Crash”, a film hated by minority intellectuals.
Tony Curtis made headlines when he declared that kissing Marilyn Monroe was like kissing Hitler.
Then a famous Broadway producer announced that Tony Curtis gave his best performance when he played a woman in “Some Like It Hot!”
This could go on and on.
Loretta Young’s career would have been finished!
I don’t know if she was baptized a catholic, or later converted.
