News Of The World Sued by Brangelina; Intrepid Reporters sit near Angie on L.A. flight
A source at NOTW confirmed to me minutes ago that the paper is being sued by Brangelina. Meanwhile, IUC has learned that at least two reporters bought executive class tickets on Angie’s L.A. flight to Miami yesterday and snapped pics of her on their cell phone cameras. One of the reporters was apparently from Life and Style Magazine while the other was from a European publication. Developing…

Journos board flights with celebs or members of the public all the time to try to secure stories. A friend of mine even moved into Jade Goody’s mum’s council flat with her for a week in order to secure Jade’s exclusive when she came out of the Big Brother house. TMZ has just obtained a copy of the full L.A. County Coroner’s report in the death of Michael Jackson — which until now was under seal. The conclusion is clear … Propofol killed the singer.

According to the report, the manner of death is homicide and the conclusion is based on the following 4 items:
1. Circumstances indicate the Propofol and the benzodiazepines were administered by another.
2. Propofol was administered in a non-hospital setting without any appropriate medical indication.
3. The standard of care for administering Propofol was not met. Recommended equipment for patient monitoring, precision dosing and resuscitation was not present.
4. The circumstances do not support self-administration of Propofol.
The Coroner’s report was under wraps until the criminal complaint was filed and it will be a centerpiece in the prosecution of Dr. Conrad Murray on charges of involuntary manslaughter.
UPDATE: In the Coroner’s report, the scene at Jackson’s house is described in detail, and the bedroom sounds like a hospital. There was a chair next to the bed — “reportedly the decedent’s doctor sat here.” Also there — a green oxygen tank, prescription meds, medical supplies, a box of catheters, disposable needles and alcohol pads. Also found — near the foot of the bed … a closed bottle of urine.
As we first reported, authorities found 11 bottles of Propofol in the house — 3 100 ml vials and 8 20 ml vials.
Also, there was talk about Jackson’s hair and reports he was bald. In fact, the Coroner’s report says, “The decedent’s head hair is sparse and is connected to a wig.”
UPDATE: As for what drugs were found in Michael Jackson’s house … authorities found Diazepam (for anxiety) prescribed by Dr. Murray, Lorazepam (for anxiety) prescribed by Dr. Murray and Temazepam (for insomnia) prescribed by Dr. Murray. Authorities also found Clonazepam (for panic disorders) prescribed by Dr. Allan Metzger, Trazodone (an anti-depressant) prescribed by Dr. Metzger. And they found Tizanidine (a muscle relaxer) prescribed to Omar Arnold (a Jackson alias) prescribed by Dr. Arnold Klein. There was also an empty vial of Propofol injectable emulsion and an empty glass vial of a Flumazenil injection (which reverses effects of sedation) and a broken syringe.
As we first reported, authorities found 11 vials of Propofol … 3 100 ml vials and 8 20 ml vials. None of the bottles had prescription directions, patient or doctor names.
They also found liquid Midazolam, Lorazepam liquid (injectable) and 14 capsules of ephedrine, caffeine aspirin, Zanaflex and Prednisone. There was also Azithromycin, prescribed by Dwight James/Cherilyn Lee and the patient name was Kathlyn Hursey.
UPDATE: An anesthesiologist who consulted with the Coroner said there are “NO reports of it’s use (Propofol) for insomnia relief, to my knowledge. The only reports of its use in homes are cases of fatal abuse.”

ReplyJolie has a long history of stalking lovers who leave her, I think this is just another case of it. Brad and Mad travel for a father son bonding day at the Superbowl, Jolie for some reason decides to hijack their time together by showing up somewhere she is not invited just to remind him that he can’t leave her. She won’t let him leave her. He probably has a team of people who monitor her whereabouts, especially after that DGA episode where she showed uninvited. So he’s at the stadium, catches wind of her impending arrival, so what is he supposed to do? Not let her in? Create a scene? Quel scandal that would be! So no, he has a few drinks, sits her down, gropes her publicly sort of to say ‘well, you came here, here’s what you get’.
So then happy-the-saints-are-winning-drunk-little-Brad just decides to play along with it. It’s done, she’s there, so is their son, he may as well make it an event, and follow up with his legal teams after. I think there’s a reason why the reporters were on her flight, I think it’s obvious to people who have any sense of smell whatsoever, that there’s a huge stink in this Brangelia break up, that there’s a scandal looming that involves stalking, that once again her reputation for not letting her lovers leave her is proving to be true.
But suing the NOTW? Is this just a major deflection? Is there so much at risk for scandal that they need to present this massive united front to deflect from what’s around the corner if either of them comes forward with the truth of what’s going on behind the scenes? Does Brad have to play this nicely for fear of Ms. Jolie’s retaliation?

ReplyWhat I find funny is that Brangelina are suing the NOTW not only for printing a story they claim is false, but also for being “intrusive” and they are doing it using the privacy laws that have been used by celebs to such great effect lately (Max Moseley and John Terry being two notable recent cases, well, JT tried). I wonder how this argument will go down in court when the judge considers Madame Jolie’s willingness to discuss the sexual positions her and Brad liked to use while she was pregnant. Oh and the selling of the pictures of their newborn (and newly acquired) children to the world wide media. Does this not slightly compromise their demand for “privacy” when it comes to the discussion of the dissolution of their relationship? They can’t have it both ways…

It’s so obvious there is major trouble in their relationship, even if they aren’t 100% broken up already. Angie Jo is hardly the sports fan. She’s no Posh Beckham. It’s all just so convenient, isn’t it? It’s like Angie cannot stand anyone to say bad things about her life and her break-up and crappy relationship with Brad, so JUST TO SHOW all of us, she makes this very public outing at the most televised event of the year. Give me a break. She is such a freaking egomaniac. I think she truly has to be the center of attention or else she just can’t take it. That, and the fact that these two screwed up Jen’s life to be together and endured a massive public backlash — they simply cannot admit to the world they both made a mistake… I think that is also at the center of having to control what the public thinks of them. Because if they do break up, they will have to endure thousands of voices saying Brad, “WE TOLD YOU SO.”

Honestly, I do think the Superbowl appearance was a PR move (clever, too, bc it was better than an obviously & by necessity orchestrated, heavy-handed Smooth Things Over on the Red Carpet appearance – at least here, they can have portray a semblance of “candid,” “behind-the-scenes” “honesty”, aka “the real story.”) However, I don’t even think their intention is to completely negate the break-up rumors bc they could’ve done that earlier and more definitively before the stories grew like wildfire. By recently appearing separately on the red carpet, by keeping quiet, by threatening a law suit, by showing up at the Superbowl, I think they really just want to confuse people. The message is simply, “it’s not what you think” and provides no answers but allows speculation to continue. And they probably like speculation – those are interesting stories to tell, sells papers, extends interest in their “brand,” and has less repercussion on them. (What was never proven true, never has to be proven false later, it can just be forgotten). That’s also why I think they would never sue Ian, for his book or this site. To sue would prove the rumors true (not good for their image) or false (which might mean a lot of interest in them would actually diminish – no gossip, no story – even if some people would actually like them more). I don’t know if they’ll even sue NOTW, I think that move is just to recenter the issue more ambiguously, as it was starting to look like their break up was a done deal. They’re probably only half way broken up. A lot of people stay in semi-working relationships for another 6 months (if they have no kids) to a year or two (if they do have kids). I understand Ian’s projected timeline for their break-up. Makes sense to me, unless something happens (such as illness or a personal tragedy) that brings them closer together.

Coincidence: Brad wasn’t among the oscar nominees announced at that time!
Last year, he was critically thrashed for his perf as “Benjamin Button”. The critics said the makeup gave the bulk of the performance! Yet, the part won over the emotions of the voters, and he was nommed in place of Clint Eastwood, for “Gran Torino”, for just one.
This yr, there were actors nominated, who could give Braddie some acting lessons. And, similarly, one who was overlooked (it appears the voters didn’t see the film); Viggo Mortenson, for “The Road”.
Even Robert Downey, Jr. would/should have garnered more votes than Braddie.

Kate–thank you for that. It was as I suspected. They (or she) are not suing for libel, but that their (her) life is their (her) property. That is an interesting legal argument. I guess they’re (she) saying it’s their (her) right to manage the release of information regarding their life, and NOTW article infringed on that right. Oh yeah, and bye the way, it’s not true, but we’re (I’m) not going to sue for libel.
Now, is there a British solicitor reading that can shed some light on why this course? Is this easier to prove than libel in England?
The original article contained so much detail, it sounded like someone on the inside was talking. Is this AJ’s way of smoking out the BP loyal sources? Will the reporter burn his sources and reveal them? Probably not.

ReplyWell, they did add this paragraph to the New York Times article, so they are addressing the break up claims as well. Which makes me think it’s not just that they published private negotiation details but they claim the break up claim is false too:
In a statement, Keith Schilling, a lawyer who represents Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie in the suit, said the misuse of private information — under certain circumstances, a violation of British law — did not depend on whether the information was true or false. But, the statement added, “we can confirm unequivocally, and upon instructions,” that the published claims of a pending break-up of the couple were false.

The key word at the end was ..”Pending”..they are not saying they are not breaking up, they are saying the breakup, in the way it was reported, going down, is not true. The lawyers are saying they are not breaking up right now.The NOTW stated the contract did not have a date on it. Of course they are not together according to those who know them, but they can pretend they are for the next 10 years, in truth the average person out there does not care. Look at the box office. It hurts them more to be together. I bet if they split their numbers would go up and one of them might even finally win that little gold man. Stinky, I agree, she is trying to smoke out who leaked this to NOTW. We heard they accused each other, and it would not be surprising if Brad did, if he wants out as badly as reported. They will never tell her that though. Instead she will simply make a fool of herself, while they assemble a better legal team to display all her dirty laundry, rubber sheet by sheet. Rupert is not going to cut her any slack just because she wants the source, and while he may not be directly involved, the umbrella will protect to a point.
Vic, back in 2006, I believe that was the year, when they were doing promos she banned journalist from the press junkets unless the signed basically what looked like the court transcript for the Scott Peterson murder trial. A xxxx load of papers, they balked and walked, threw them in her face, and word spread faster than the internet. She went on a interview that evening and blamed it on her lawyers saying it was their idea and they were just trying to protect her, which someone in camp denied and she looked like the manipulating shrew that she is. By the mid spring of 2007 Ted had birthed Fakey and the other tabs were ripping her a new one and I do not mean her bed linens. lol
So ladies and gents, this should be quite a ride, Ted is basically saying, they are over.(see above) she is backed in a corner like a bear and fighting, and Brad ,if he does not knock off this nonsense will go down with this and she will be the one to rise to the top when it is over. Man up, take your knocks, apologize for your wrong doings like you mean it, and move on. No one likes a weak man, and he may be fighting back to the paps he hates, and cutting his own throat in the process, or he may be doing as she tells him to keep his own xxxx buried, or he may have just been taken by surprise, but any which way, time to take control and end this charade. Either make it real and make it right, or get on with your life. Enough high school awkward drama. It looks no where near as genuine as it did with your wife. You can not fake that, and with your son sitting there ?
Who would have ever though Brad Pitt could have fallen so far, and that Angelina Jolie could have gotten up there so far that she is meeting with dignitaries, heads of states, etc, while Brad is behaving and looking like a C list Actor. Such a shame, truly. Underneath it all I think he really was a decent guy, or is, he just needs to get his groove back, Stella did it, lol, Brad can too.
These two are just not good together, apart they may do fine. It is embarrassing , no humiliating, to watch this though. Poor little Maddox looked lost while his parents were making out like teenagers for the cameras, and many everywhere today are shaking their heads in disbelief, disgust, or laughing at Brad. Not Angie, they expect this behavior from her. But he made a fool of himself, like waking up from a drunken night and the next day seeing film of yourself and saying , “omg, what the hell did I do that for?” normal adults with six children who are in stable committed relationships, that love their children and care about their welfare do not pull these stunts.

Definitely agree with you on the “embarrassing” and “humiliating” front, they are damaging their brand much more with this behaviour than if they had issued a quiet and dignified statement announcing their split. This is not the way to play it, I can’t believe they and their people would be this stupid. Angelina turning up at the DGAs and the Superbowl had “PR disaster” written all over it. The stunt with Muhammad Ali was embarrassing, shameful even, she looked f*cked out of her mind. The night at Clint Eastwood’s premiere with Maddox as a prop/buffer between the two of them was utterly, utterly depressing. The “golden family” they most certainly did not look then. Can’t they see they are wrecking their careers more than they ever could by splitting? Brad looked ridiculous in those Superbowl photos, like a prize fool. She was just doing her usual schtick, and here she is again in Haiti doing it all over again. Wonder if it ever occurred to La Jolie to think about how sensitive and appropriate it is to give big public PDAs at a huge sporting extravagnaza one day and be in Haiti acting sympathetic over the hundreds of thousands of people who died 48 hours later? Oh how swell it must be to have it all hey Ange? Special viewing box in America’s biggest sporting event one day, over to the site of the worst natural disaster to hit the world since the tsunami to smile for the cameras the next, and then straight back out again to Venice to shoot a movie with Jonny Depp. Angelina you are the living embodiment of the American dream my friend, gone horribly, horribly wrong.
And as for the suing well privacy laws have changed recently in the UK and celebs have been using this to great effect to try to prevent papers from printing stories about them. When the NOTW published the story on Chairman of Formula One, Max Moseley’s love of sado-masochism and orgies, with full video images, he successfully sued them not for libel, but for “invasion of privacy”. John Terry, captain of England’s national football team and the very successful Russian billionaire owned premiership football club Chelsea (think David Beckham without the looks or pop tart wife), tried to use them to prevent the paper printing stories of his infidelity with the mother of another team member’s child. He failed. So I suspect this is something Brange’s lawyers are now trying to exploit to their advantage. Let’s see how it goes, should be an entertaining ride! But what I want to know is: will Angie and Brad take the stand? CZJ had to in her libel trial with Hello (it spawned the infamous “a million pounds is not a lot of money to us” quote of course which did wonders for her popularity), so will Angie and Brad also do us the pleasure of sharing their pearls of celebrity wisdom with us? I think they will have to, don’t you? And if they do, boy will it ever be entertaining!

I would say it’s very strange you read FF, dear! That place is not for the idealistic little girls like you. (Sorry if you’re not a girl but you sound too starry-eyed to believe you are an adult.) Even the seasoned blog reader like me doesn’t want to read it because I find it too harsh and vulgar – yes, HARSH and VULGAR. ReplyI have read spiritual literature, for research. The whining statement allegedly by Angie is very similar to the whining of storied demons who complain about holy water, prayers, sacrifices, the practice of virtue, etc! etc! Their complaints about how they suffer, when one practices the above.

ReplyHaving not voiced my opinion much in this arena or any other concerning Brad and Angelina. I have to say to Lory what you have missed what is the key comments that Keane and Kate have said about Brad and Angelina. It is the children who appear to be suffering. Look at Maddox at the photos from this weekend and compare photos when he is with just Brad and not when Angie and Brad are together in a scene. Or, the shots of her with Shiloh. I have really not seen any happy shots of several of kids with Angie. WHY!! The key comments that I have seen my many on this board reflect a concern about a person who professes humanitarian works but can’t seem to bring the sense that her own children feel secure and happy.
ReplyLook at those relationships in Hollywood who are long lasting. Most have not used their children as a vehicle for PDA. I bet you that if you asked Angie to name 6 players on the New Orleans team that she could not do it. This was nothing more then a camera op for her. So if her child is interested in the sport how can she not be informed. She is probably about as aware of sports as a certain politican from Massachusetts who said Curt Shilling was a Yankee Fan. Dream on Angie – AS IF! I see Ms Jolie has her press today for showing up in the Dominican Republic like some international dignitary. What on earth does she think she is actually doing there and what purpose is it supposed to serve? She cannot use that old chestnut “to draw attention to the cause” in this instance because we have had blanket news coverage about it ever since it happened and it is not long enough after the event to say “she didn’t want to let the world forget”. So what was she doing there? What was the reasoning behind it? Why did she have all these meetings with important people? Did they think she has some power over what the UN does or something? Can someone explain this to me as I really do not know what the purpose of her being there was other than to promote herself.

Hi Astro, sorry very tired right now so no time to respond to your questions in full. Just to quickly say I agree with much of what you said, Angelina will try to fight her way out of this mess like a cornered animal. BUT, even if she wins the fight, she will not win the war. The info on her she is fighting to keep secret is just way too damaging and her public behaviour has been bad enough. She is currently employing the only PR strategy she has ever used to keep people from analysing what she has really been doing all these years (deflection/distraction), she is keeping herself in the public eye so we don’t have a moment to reflect on the fact that the Emperor has no clothes. Once she has run out of tricks/stunts and cannot distract us any more, the analysis of her true behaviour will start. And it will not be pretty. This woman is arrogant beyond belief and delusional, she is also I would argue, very stupid. She cannot possibly keep the lies she has told under wraps for years to come, they are just too great (her brother, the “twins”, the truth about her affair with Brad, the drugs etc etc) and I’m afraid some of the decisions she has made in her life have already guaranteed her destruction (or at least that of her image). There are six – we think – little witnesses to her behaviour who will all grow up with the goods on her. Only an insane, stupid or completely delusional person would not have thought about that before trying to project this earth mother, Princess DIana-esque figure. And this libel trial will be very damaging IMO. And there were we thinking La Jolie was so above all this tabloid gossip? Seems like she keeps a pretty damn close eye on it to me, doesn’t it you? But this week yes, she is still clinging on by her fingernails, like the spider on the side of the bath tub holding on for dear life to stay out of the drain pipe. But next week, and the week atfer that, and after Morton’s book comes out, and any more leaks by staff members in the press… not looking too promising is it? This woman (aided and abetted of course by her brother and Geyer the Liar) is a fighter, I’ll give her that. But she is already looking like she’s on the ropes to me. Angelina v the world’s press. She is very foolish to think she will win.
Oh and yes I knew you were joking about the suing thing. And don’t worry Astro, Kate and I have discussed that a long old time ago now. And we know that anyone commenting on this blog can be sued, we are actually more vulnerable to that than Ian as a matter of fact, as you all are. This won’t make me shut up about it though. When I read that article, I just thought: How can his wife resist this?…When I read about the Jen & Brad’s Break Up and the tabloids said that the reason was that She didn’t want to have children, I remembered his statement and I thought this: Everybody is criticizing her for that, but nobody criticized him when he said what he said about to have children. So according to the tabloids, It was her fault!!!…GOD!!!

All these ‘charades’ you will remember in about 10 months from now and possibly will cry so be strong and brace yourself for the ride of a lifetime. All these magz can’t be wrong at the same time; all these people can’t be wrong at the same time. If you take these ’superbowl pictures to an analyst of body language will tell you the following: 1) When people are drinking they act differently than prior to drinking 2) You can get a ‘drunk’ person to do just about anything in a crowded environment or in closed doors. 3) You see Pitt in these pictures with his drink, one looks like a champagne glass when holding Jolie closed to him and you see her trying to hide the glass 4) You see Pitt when riding with Maddox in the cart, he is holding a ‘drink’, possible alcohol. You don’t hold soda this way or pour soda in what looks like paper container, common sense tells you to leave it in the original container: Coke or Pepsi. 5) We see Pitt with a big smile when he arrives at touchdown at the airport I believe and when he is entering the stadium, who wouldn’t. 6) You see Pitt smile again when the team is winning, scoring a TOUCHDOWN and expressing various contagious outburst of happiness, again, who wouldn’t, his team is winning. 7) You see Pitt again outburst hugging Angie when the team wins; he gives her a forced kiss that you do not neccesarily know for sure if she initiated. He cannot say no, his team won and besides he is feeling good since he’s been drinking.
Poor Maddox have no chance, while they are riding and Pitt is all tense holding up to the chair, you can see his sadness and blank look, like spaced out in just about every picture, except when the team won the superbowl. Max expression is of a confussed young boy. Do they want me to cry or to smile?…I better look down to the floor, that way I feel safe” .” Look Mad, don’t look mad, try to smile and look happy, quick Mad, smile, look Mad! Again,, the boy is thinking: ‘I’m confussed.” Jolie is looking directly at the camera since she knows where they are…. and she says also: Look Brad, smile for the camera, smile commom, we are winning, you know.” and there you have the actual facts on happened on superbowl day, not a pretty picture. When is all over and they all leave, Brad with Mad and AJ alone, then everyone is wearing the reality sets in smile. Brad is himself again, the miserable grin, not smiling. In fact in one of the pictures he looks as if he’s yelling at her, but we don’t know for sure we were not there. And with Angie, the plastic smile,AHH, ‘even if my jaw hurts smile’, keep it up Reality, not make believe. You have to admit you don’t know Astro, like I do, I don’t know but the picture don’t lie. So if you are making any kind of bets, take your losses and ’split’. I mean literally…

When you talk about things that you have no knowledge or experience of like you do then it doesn’t even come across as arrogance, it just makes you sound really stupid. Intelligent people consider the experience and knowledge base of the person they are talking to when they are having a conversation with them about a particular subject. You don’t. And that is just stupidity on your part, sorry.

ReplyMia – I think it’s damage control. Sorry Keane, not stepping in here, just wanted to say. I think she leaks watered down bad things just to preempt something that might be said later. For instance, if she said she and Pitt don’t have to be monogamous, and makes it sound perfectly reasonable that they could have other lovers and still love each other, then when some mag prints a story about her and one of her lovers she can say: Oh, I already told you that, no big deal, Brad’s on board with that. Same thing with tearing his shirt cos she gets so mad, then when someone prints a story about a big knock down drag out fight she can say again, I already explained that, no big deal.

So all she’s doing now is trying to transfer the blame for her problems to other people? She blames Jennifer Aniston, society in general and anybody but herself for the total failure of her lame act? She even talks about a relentless hate campaign organized by Aniston over the last five years? Reading that article, I thought that if I had spent the last five years on another planet, I would have almost fallen under the impression that Aniston was the villain in the entire story!
I find the final paragraph the most sickening and disloyal of all – in a last attempt to save herself, she actually throws Pitt – her own partner and the father of her children – under the bus by describing him as an alcoholic? Regardless of the fact she owes him virtually everything she has now? Would she get even two people in the world to pay attention to her fake humanitarianism if he wasn’t next to her? If it weren’t for that magical “Brad Pitt” label stuck to her name, she wouldn’t have achieved any mystique at all!
Now the magic of that label is not the same anymore because she has increased her own at his expense but honestly, if she can throw HIM under the bus, though he is the father of her children, all I can say is that’s a woman who can throw anybody under the bus to save herself. I wonder if she’d sell her own mother down the river if she had to – yeah, why not? – I’m beginning to believe the story about her mother’s boyfriend now.
The bottom line is the woman is totally incapable of accepting any responsibility for her own actions. She is incapable of seeing any connection between her own actions and the results of those actions. She is unable to accept that people can dislike or criticize her for any of the cruel, insensitive things she’s done. She’s full of projections and sees nothing but ill–wishers who are out to get her? What a mental case!

Thanks hun, am so shocked and upset by it. A former flatmate of mine used to do PR for him, she used to talk about him and Isabella Blow all the time. I went to his launch party for Gucci with her, he seemed like a lovely, genuine guy. I was very upset when I heard about Isabella Blow’s suicide a few years ago, and am even more so about him. They were both so talented, and so quintessentially British. They were what London is all about: arty, eccentric, crazy, talented, tortured geniuses. He led the way where other designers followed in the UK. Such a great loss to the industry and to London, he had so much more left to give. Very, very sad. Well, tragic really.

I think her PR is controlled by Geyer and James to be honest, and I think they will both stoop to any low to try to keep her career going. I think she is basically their business, and they are totally detached and coldly calculating about the lies they propagate on her behalf. I am beginning to think her PR is more led by them than it is her these days. She must be on board to some degree obviously, but I sense that there are probably a couple of utterly ruthless men behind the more recent stories to be honest. Put it this way, she is not doing herself too many favours with her most recent media activity. She is making herself look ten times worse most of the time. If she’d played it down and tried to stay out of the media spotlight a bit over the last few months she might have survived this. She could have taken the high road and looked dignified and “better than that”. She hasn’t though, she’s risen to it all and made herself look like a desperate junkie trying to wring the last drop out of her celebrity like the heroin out of a syringe before she goes cold turkey for good. If she was more in control of her faculties I’m not sure she would be doing this. Anyone with half a brain can see how badly it is going for her. I feel like there are a couple of dispassionate men behind it all nowadays who are going for broke with her image and are adopting an “all or nothing” policy with her. It’s like the person who is behind it doesn’t care if it doesn’t work out, that they can always throw her away at the end and move on to the next product. The things that they are publishing in her name now are just so very damaging that they are going to sink her. I wonder if James really loves her that much after all. Maybe he just loves the money he makes off of her, who knows.

According to Ian’s book, James was actually the one who was supposed to have the brilliant career, apparently he was very a very talented director, they really thought he was going to be an important man in HW. But, then Angie decided she wanted to act, and then Marcheline took over the management of her career, and James just seemed to fall by the wayside. He didn’t get the support or the dogged determination from his parents that she did, and apparently he wasn’t strong enough to tough it out on his own. So, I wonder….does he love her, or does he love her to death? I’m quite sure that she supports him, I know he got some money from his Mom, but not anywhere near what Angie could do for him so there is that too, he is dependent upon her, whether he wants to be or not. I think he must be a very conflicted and tortured soul, he is very religious, I wonder if that’s because he is trying to win back the soul he sold to the devil?

SO Angie Ho is still on her solo Haiti publicity trip then? Just saw some of that interview she did on CNN. Could someone possibly remind me why she is there again? She has said it is to “listen and learn” (bleurgh) and in that interview she said she was there to figure out what needs to be done for these people, so I take it this is a fact-finding mission then? But who exactly is it she will be reporting back to on this – can someone enlighten me? Is it the UN? The US government? One of her pet charities? I am quite baffled by it. Plus, call me cynical, but wouldn’t it be better to have someone who was either trained and experienced in disaster relief or say a member of medecins sans frontieres doing such a thing? How is Angie Jo, star of Tomb Raider, Mr and Mrs Smith and Wanted qualified for the job? I’m just wondering because there are millions of lives at stake here, and we seem to be relying on a HW actress to advise the world what we should and shouldn’t be doing, it is quite worrying. I am all on board with celebs donating the easy cash they make for being famous to charitable causes and using their celebrity to help raise funds for the same, but actually going to disaster zones and then being interviewed on a major news channel as if they are some sort of disaster relief expert and they are going to sort out this whole mess is beyond the pale to me. I wouldn’t mind so much if she was actually going to physically do something to help, but the reality is she’s off to Venice for 6 months in a week or two to shoot a flick with Jonny Depp for millions of dollars. in south africa i have always helped the people standing at the robots and sitting around the shopping centres but now i have decided that i will only give to the old and the very sick as parents are letting their kids beg at the robots while they sit around the corner and waite for the money. and the healthy young beggers i will not help like the one that sits near my shop as he has never comes in and asks if i do not have a job for him to do so that he can earn some money instead of begging. since they have learnt that they can make money by begging they do not want to work and that is my gripe with all this money that is being given. as even the teenagers are now having babies to get the R250.00 a month in child support not thinking that that money will not keep the kid in nappies and food for a week.

That was basically the argument of Paul Theroux in his travel journal Dark Star Safari. He taught in Africa in the 60’s and was going back 40 years later to see whether it had changed at all. Depressingly, after 40 years of charity efforts and billions of dollars being pumped into the continent, that if anything, it was worse off not better. He talks about how lazy, corrupt govt officials come to think it is in their interests to keep their country poor so they qualify for aid, and put no effort into development which might help the country help itself. Aid literally becomes the largest contributor of capital to a country’s economy and it dwarfs the amount of income that could be made through other industries. Theroux also talks about brand spanking new charity-funded hospitals and schools that had fallen into disrepair and not used due to lack of maintenance; groups of people moving to disaster zones in the hope that if there is another disaster in the same place, they will benefit from the aid and free accommodation that previous victims have received; African people who don’t want to take over the teaching jobs that westerners have devoted years of their lives to when they leave and would rather go to New York and earn dollars driving a cab and so on. His basic argument is that aid has not and does not work, and we should completely rethink the whole thing. His view of the presence of charities and the UN in these countries is not flattering either. He describes them as driving around in their expensive, flash, brand new white 4×4, totally ignoring the people and people like him who are travelling around on public transport. Was just reading a blog of a friend of mine who is a reporter for a doc strand on Channel 4 in the UK and did a programme on Sierra Leone last year. He talks about how there are NGOs all over the place and they do precisely nothing. The money is frittered away training local people to write pointless reports and they lie about the reasons for the problems of the poplace so they qualify for more aid to pay for their salaries. The whole system is inept and corrupt. Throwing money at these countries is not necessarily always a positive thing and we need someone a bit more informed than the likes of a HW actress to make decisions on where money is directed and how it is spent. This woman does not know what she is talking about and it scares me that she might have an influence over how a lot of well-meaning people’s donations are spent. When asked by Anderson Cooper (is that his name?) what Africa’s biggest problem was she replied and I quote: “They’re a tribal people you know, but they’re trying, they’re really trying”. Please keep this woman away from Haiti!

I loved Theroux’s book. What a read. And can you imagine making your way from Cairo to Capetown by any means available? Have you read William Boyd’s A Good Man In Africa? Wonderful fiction about British foreign service. Hilarious. They made it into a movie, but it wasn’t nearly has funny as the book.
I saw an article when AJ was in the Dominican Republic, and I think someone posted it here the other day, where the Haitian muckety-muck who had to stop whatever he was doing to go greet her, thanked her for coming and bringing the “attention of the world” to the disaster, which had only been covered 24/7 for a couple of weeks by international news. I think that’s the celebrity-visit-statement equivalent of “have a nice day.” Absolutely meaningless.

@ stinky-inky – well that is what I’m planning to do myself, ideally next winter. Which is why I read the book really. Ewan Macgregor and friend did a similar route on motorbikes for a TV show. I’m not sure whether I’ll travel through the whole continent in one go though. Will probably go to different areas at different times. Travelled around morocco when I was 23. We went into the sahara desert on camels and camped under the stars with berber tribesmen, was amazing. Wish I could post the pics but this was in the days before digital cameras. It was incredible though, like being on the set of star wars. And I’ve never seen the stars in the sky look so bright. Part of the camel trip was at night and it was in the pitch darkness. It was just my friend and I on two camels being led by this berber guy who sang the whole way to where we were camping. When we asked him how he found his way to where we were going at night, he said he followed the stars. Magical huh?
