IUC Fashion: Never did we think we’d see the day…

Never did we think we’d see the day…where popular culture would truly unite with political culture but yesterday, Praise the Lord, things changed.

Today, I sit in the United States of America and ponder not the ways in which the country has struggled its way from slavery to absolute freedom but rather, I think about the fashions at yesterday’s inauguration with self-congratulation because it’s a new world and I’m going to do what I want to do, Amen.

And it is not too far off to think of the inaugural procession as if it was a perfectly art-directed catwalk, beginning with the strangely crippled and downtrodden republicans and finishing with the sparkling democrats, glimmering in bows and bright colours, and pride-filled with their absolute abilities to walk.  From Dick Cheney’s choice of accessory – arguably the result of packing too many rifles in one box – to George Bush Senior’s cane and over-compensatory electric-blue scarf, to Laura Bush’s (or was that Michael Jackson’s?) silver, funereal shrouds, the republicans looked more like a scene out of Beetlejuice than a team of leaders passing the torch.

But no doubt, when that beautiful semblance of pure light, Michelle Obama, came out in her glowing yellow dress, America believed that the long awaited torch was finally passed.  Obama chose the right wife, had the right kids – perfectly outfitted in cute without an ounce of cloying dresses – and America chose the right man for president.

Everything in the Democratic fashion choices from the First Lady’s canary yellow to the second lady’s hooker boots, at one point might have had finger-wagging critics saying “Oh no you, Di’ ‘int, but today has them saying “ Oh Yes We Can.”

Erin, I think your piece on Inauguration fashion is terrific, and unironically moving to boot. In fact, it wasn’t until I came to Michael Jackson and Laura’s funereal garb that I was SURE who the author was. Not that your writing leaves anything to be desired when you instantly show your claws.

Was that Erin? Erin. Laura Bush looked great. She didn’t upstage the First Lady.

    It was class.
