LOVE IT!!!!! Newman Gay thing....don't think so, but LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!
It's unfortunate that theatres don't expose more mutli cultural mediums of existence, that we have to have specially made cinemas dedicated to one genre or the other instead of embracing ALL......a solid statement on the state of our Global society today! However, if that's what it takes to desensitize the many homophobic individuals then HAHNEY, wear your rainbow ribbons LOUD and Shout it at the top of your lungs!!
We are global community composed of diversity, multi ethnicities, lifestyles, cultures, and to brandish one less than or more than is merely a subjective commentary of an ignorant fool. Hopefully as we move forward, there will be cinemas that will be focusing more on multi everything than main stream money sucking block busters! Time for ALL to get their chance to SHINE!! Way to go!

Good Lord that was a fun read! Thanks Ian!

Even if only 1/3 of it were true, it still fairly boggles the mind.

JCW,

Hi Art!

Nice to see a fellow survivor from the dark ages of Hollywood still alive and kicking.

As I said.... I was told about Mr. Newman, but didn't meet or see him in person, so I can't vouch for what was or wasn't the truth. Ian, on the other hand, seems to have heard more compelling tales of Mr. Newman's wanderings... perhaps he'll elaborate?

It's not speaking ill of the dead, more just trying to understand the compromises that stars of the 50s had to make to obtain that stardom. Relevent, as people are still doing exactly the same in 2008. I imagine that if there's any truth to it, the divine Joanne Woodward was well aware of it and chose love over fidelity.

I'm the "someone" above who bemoaned the state of gay indie films. Thanks for seconding my opinion that they'd better start putting out better product if they hope to support a nine screen cineplex!

i worked in LA in '78-'81, Santa Monica Blvd, and i never heard any rumors about Paul Newman. not about drugs nor rent boys, and i was out there every night. there are millions of men that fall into that category, but i'm 100% positive Newman was not one of them. i now live about 15 miles from where Newman lived in Connecticut and i've never heard any rumors about him while he was alive either. i doubt rumors after his death have any validity.

i don't think this idea for a cineplex will last much more than a few months either. as someone said above, gay-themed movies are for the most part, barely rentable. it will become just another Times Square Disney project.

great points, JCW. Paul for sure liked the men. In fact he was linked to many, and almost left his wife for one leading Hollywood man but was convinced by his marriage counsellor not to.

Hollywood, 1980: On Santa Monica Blvd., word on the street was that on occassion Mr. Newman enjoyed the company of rent boys.

True? Who knows.... but I did hear it multiple times from different people. How about you, Ian? Ever hear any gossip on this?

Regardless, the guy was a terrific actor, a great philanthropist and by all accounts a nice guy.

I heard that Paul Newman used to be a junkie, carrying a spoon around his neck during the late '60s and early '70s (so that he could cook dope). But I never heard anything about him being gay. I think someone confused Newman with Charlie Sheen.
