Paul Newman Dies at 83

Another screen legend passes on. Please post your comments, condolences and thoughts here about Paul. In my opinion, he was one helluva class act who perhaps was the last of the male silver screen legends.

Paul Newman is dead? Weird. I had a dream about him once, which had to be the strangest “guest celebrity appearance” in the history of my dreams. I was at his farm, and we played cards in his kitchen while he went into a bitter, hate filled rant about the people in his life. Then we walked around the fields, where he explained that he donated all the proceeds of his food products to charity because he had no choice, and if he had his druthers, he’d keep it all for himself. This dream was like, 8 or 9 years ago, so my memory of it is a little fuzzy, but I’m pretty sure he also called Joanne Woodward the ‘C’ word. I do remember waking up and thinking “What the fuck was that?”. Paul might have been a bit of a dick in my dream, but I’m fairly sure that is the exact opposite of who he actually was, a true philanthropist in an industry full of philanderers.
RIP Paul, and thanks for all the great acting. And the salsa!

Paul Newman was one of my favorite actors. He was a Hollywood legend–and Hollywood is sadly getting very low on legends. And I’m sure I’m not the only gay man who thought Mr. Newman was a handsome hunk in addition to being a talented actor. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family–especially to his lovely wife of 50 years, actress Joanne Woodward.

Paul was a great actor and, more importantly, seemed like an absolutely fantastic person. At least he had a long, fulfilling life. Putting dressing on my salad over the next few weeks will be a bit more emotional with Paul looking back at me from the label.

First off let me say that Fig Newmans are far superior to Fig Newtons in every possible way. I could go on forever about Paul Newman’s amazing acting career and philanthropic endeavors. The Newman brand of products has raised over two hundred million dollars thus far, but beyond the obvious, there is one fact about Newman that truly illustrates the caliber of his person. On September 9th, 1971 a memo was circulated among Richard Nixon’s special counsels, the memo has come to be known as “the enemies list,” and it contained twenty names. The purpose of the list was to “screw” Nixon’s enemies through tax audits, grant availability, federal contracts, litigation and prosecution. Paul Newman was 19th on the list. Newman considered this his greatest accomplishment.
