IUC Exclusive: Spielberg’s New Biopic About Lincoln Reveals President was Very Much For Slavery; To Start Filming In January
It’s official - Steven Spielberg has cast Liam Neeson to play the role of the 16th President of the U.S. And it may be a very controversial portrayal of Lincoln. Spielberg demanded rewrite after rewrite cause he was not happy with the way writer Tony Kushner dealt with the way Lincoln abolished slavery. He thought Kushner was too sympathetic toward Lincoln and ordered him to reveal more details, including how the Republican President initially was in favor of slavery and how in 1842 he had married into an affluent Kentucky family who were notorious slaveowners. Kushner does not deal with the longstanding rumors that Lincoln was gay, even though Lincoln lived and slept in the same bed for four years with a shopkeeper named Joshua Speed. And there were scores of other men rumored to have had affairs with Lincoln.
“I think the evidence is flimsy,” said Neeson, who prepared for the role by reading 22 books about Lincoln. “That’s not to say that he wasn’t gay, but it’s not to say he was either.”
